• What You Should Know Before Adding a Fence to Your Property

When you’re deciding on some home improvement projects, it’s not always as easy as it seems. Sometimes, different projects need certain approvals, and adding a fence is one of them. With our 20 years of experience here at Allstar Fence and Deck, we wanted to give some insight on what you should know before you start the process of installing a new fence on your property.

Before you start preparing your home for a new fence, make sure you speak with the city or county you live in and submit a permit if necessary. They’ll ask for the design, size and material to make sure that everything is approved throughout the city. If you’re not sure which type of fence you want just yet, ask for a list of approved fences that you can choose from so that you are aware of the rules and restrictions for fences and decks.

The next step to take before installing a fence is to know your property lines! Your backyard may seem big, but you’ll need to figure out the exact outline of your yard so you don’t have to re-do everything if you’ve gone onto your neighbor’s part of land by accident.

It’s also always a good idea to discuss your fence options with your neighbors. Even though the fence will be on your property, it’s a nice gesture to give them a heads up. You never know, they might be deciding on installing a fence and you can work something out!

So, after you understand the rules and restrictions that come along with installing a fence, now it’s time to decide on the material, height, and design. If you’re getting a fence because you have a dog that you want to run around, then height may be your main decision so that he or she can’t jump over it. This is a huge decision because you could end up wasting money if you build a fence that is too high, or too low. This can also be a big factor if the main reason you’re getting a fence is to have more privacy.

When you’re picking out your design and material, keep in mind how much work and maintenance you’re willing to put in after the fence is completed. Certain materials, like wooden fences for example, require a lot of work to make sure that the fence stays in the best shape possible, while others, like aluminum fences, require very little upkeep to remain looking nice and new. We can give you recommendations and can help choose which the best fit for your home is.
